This little girl is not a fan of the tummy time, but she can hold her toys, suck her thumb, and even sit up in her Bumbo seat! Oh dear, my little girl is growing up so fast!

I know posts have been scarce around these parts, but when you have an adorable 3 month old daughter, and you ask yourself, "daughter or blog?", daughter always wins! I'm back now and ready to take on the new year!

{our birth story, part 2}

So, this is the easy part. Now we get to relax and enjoy our baby girl!

On our way to postpartum we ran into a group of excited crazy people! Ok, it was our parents, brother and best friends. :) Gathered in the hall, we had Hannah's first introduction to her family and friends :) When people love you so much they just can't wait to meet you, Hannah Lou!

On our first night in the hospital we had a bit of a scare when Hannah spit up amniotic fluid. She started choking, so the nurse flipped her over and started swatting her on the back HARD! Poor little baby threw up all over the floor, then turned blue and was rushed over to the nursery to have her tummy pumped. I was, needless to say..freaked out, but Nicolai went with her and all was well after that. Obviously, it was impossible for us to sleep after that, so the nurse took her back to the nursery for a few hours so we could rest and know someone was watching her.

Upon arriving home we were greeted by signs, streamers, balloons, flowers, food and gifts! It was a pretty great way to come back to the "real world"

Homemade Vanilla Chai mix

mix together:

1 cup nonfat dry milk powder
1 cup powdered non-dairy creamer
1 cup powdered vanilla creamer
2 1/2 cups sugar
1 1/2 cups unsweetened instant tea (like Nestea)
2 tsp ground ginger
3 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ground cloves
1 tsp ground cardamom
1 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp allspice

From here its pretty simple :) Mix together in a big bowl and blend it up! If you blend it, it is a much finer powder and mixes much easier. Plus it looks prettier! Otherwise the dry milk is in big funky chunks. Then pour into cute jars and decorate with your up cycled gift tags or other creative wrapping! If you aren't into chai try out, my good ol stand by, spiced orange tea!

I'm sure I'm not the only one on a tight budget this Christmas, so here are some other great inexpensive gift ideas!

{make do: diy infant bow headbands}

The other day I was goofing around with felt and made a bow for my holiday wreath and thought, "Hmm this would make a super cute baby headband for Hannah Lou!"

All you need is a pair of old nylons, felt, fabric scissors, and hot glue.

First cut out 3 pieces of felt. Just estimate the size based on how large you want your bow. Just make sure the two longest pieces are the same width. then cut on little piece to wrap around the middle of your bow.

Take you longest piece and cut V shaped notches out of each end.

Take your middle piece and hot glue each end to the middle of the strip making a figure eight shape.

Then cut notches out of each side of your two longest pieces. Try to make your cuts even on each side. I pretty much eye balled this whole thing, so really just do your best.

Glue your middle piece onto your long piece. Try to line up your notches.

Then take your nylons and cut a wide piece to use as your headband. Stretch the loop out before you glue it to your bow.

Lastly, hot glue your small piece of felt around the bow with the headband tucked neatly inside!

Make sure to pinch the bow tight. Its easiest if you glue one end and then pull it tightly around and trim the felt to the right length and glue. And your done!

Now that I am officially a new mom I feel like I have a good understanding of what a nursing mom wants and needs in those first few weeks. Between my friends, family and husband, I have been SPOILED! Here are the some things I have found most helpful and necessary these last few months! Keep these in mind when you have a friend with a new baby! :)

cute diaper bag- Timi and Leslie "Dawn" and "Charlie" are my favorites. I know I already shared these but I am soo in love with them!

Glamourmom nursing tank with compression band. The compression makes you feel more put together! You have quite the jiggle belly for awhile. Plus it is a nursing tank!

the moby wrap- I can just throw this thing on and walk down stairs for a coffee. We live right on a "main street" of sorts and have a Peets and Starbucks right downstairs!

fresh flowers- these particular ones are from Caroline :) They had the cutest yarn poms in the bouquet!

Spiru-tein protein powder for a quick breakfast. Yum! I'm sharing some of my recipes soon!

{our birth story, part 1}

Here is the story of how our little family of two became a slightly larger family of three :)

After almost 9 months of pregnancy, I was DONE being pregnant. I was excitedly finishing the nursery, washing baby clothes, and nesting up a storm. While running around town on the morning of October 18th, I got in a fender bender! I was the second car hit in a chain reaction and everyone involved was freaking out when I stepped out of the car 9 months pregnant! Fortunately the damages were very minor but I was a little shook up and the adrenaline was a pumpin'. I remember asking the CHP officer, "Is it bad that I am hoping this will make me go into labor?" He just laughed and checked my car seat :)

Well lo and behold the next day I started experiencing cramping. Just light cramps but still something! I couldn't help but get excited! Over the course of the day the cramping got stronger and more frequent. After lunch with my Mom at In-N-Out and a coffee date/ walk with my friend Aly I was convinced that something was happening. After arriving home I excited announced to my husband that I thought I might be going into early labor.

At 7:30 pm Nicolai left for community group and I started timing contractions, keeping him updated on any changes. When he got home around 9pm, the contractions where really picking up. We labored on and on into the night. At about 1:30am my Mom came over to give Nicolai a break. The poor guy was practically falling asleep standing up. We didn't realize until later that I was having back labor and couldn't sit or lay down without a lot of discomfort, resulting in almost the whole night on my feet. At this point I had been awake somewhere around 19 hrs and was getting pretty tired. We called the hospital around 3am but decided to labor at home a little longer.

At 8:30am on the morning of October 20th after calling Labor and Delivery for the second time, we decided it was time to go to the hospital. The ride there was NOT FUN! Every bump and turn was adding to the discomfort and my greatest fear at that point was that I hadn't progressed enough and I would be sent home. The last thing I wanted was another car ride that morning! No thank you! When we arrived at the hospital, we had to stop at intake and check in. They had me sign paper work! All I could think was, "Are you freaking kidding me!" My hand was shaking so much, it probably didn't even look like my signature! :) While hubs finished getting us checked in I walked the hall outside the office with my mom. FINALLY we headed upstairs to Labor and Delivery. When we got there, we found out I was the only women on the unit that morning, and it stayed that way all day! After getting changed into my beautiful hospital gown and funky belly band, they checked my progress. Praise the Lord! I was at 4cm! I was so relieved to hear the midwife say, "You're not going anywhere, we are having this baby today!"

Over the next 3 hrs we labored in lots of different positions, I tried to lay down some and rest but it was more painful and was slowing down my contractions. Luckily the nursing staff was really flexible and pretty much let me do whatever I wanted. Finally after what felt like an eternity, my midwife checked me again to find that I was still at 5 cm! Progress yes, but not what I was hoping for. This was nothing though, compared to the disappointment I felt when and hour later I was still at 5, and another hour later. We talked about some options to speed up my contractions and decided to break my water. That did it. Holy Moly! Over the next hour and a half I dilated from 5cm to 10. All I can say is Ouch! We tried laboring in the shower, walking the halls, and massage, all of which helped at least for a time. At a certain point I started feeling really tired and began to doubt whether I could do this or not. Then all of a sudden...boom! I feel a huge bulge in my butt. I had heard about the infamous 'butt bulge' and was convinced this was it! Seconds later I felt like by body was lurching off the table trying to push this baby out. It was the craziest thing. I kept saying, "I need to push! I feel like I need to push!" Since it had been under 2hrs since they had last checked me, the midwife was doubtful that it was time but my mom insisted they check me. They tried to prepare me and said they didn't think I would be farther along than an 8. But they were wrong. I was a 10! This baby was coming! At this point it was somewhere around 4:30 pm and I was TIRED, but being told it was time to push gave be a burst of energy. It was almost over. Thank goodness!

As soon as the midwife announce it was baby time, a whole troupe of nurses and students came flooding into the room and gearing up. The baby nurse turned on the warmer and I knew I was about to meet my little girl. This also meant I had to push a baby out of my body, but it was too late to go back now :) At first they were going to have me push on my back, but as soon as I rolled over I knew that wasn't about to happen. I requested to push while on my side and it was so much easier. Every time I felt a contraction coming, I would grab my leg and they knew it was time to push again. It was pretty hard to talk at that point so I just did my own thing. Each time I started pushing I had a whole chorus of cheers to encourage me. Between doctors, nurses, students and family (Mom and Nicolai) there were 9 people all crowded around my bed while I pushed. It made it a little hard to focus on what the midwife was telling me to do, but luckily I just did whatever I felt I needed to do. On my first push, the midwife was shocked to see the top of Hannah's head! I was super encouraged knowing she was right there, and let me tell you, I pushed SO hard. I was ready to be done with all this craziness. After 20 minutes of pushing, she was here. She arrived at 4:59pm. It was such a strange feeling. She came fast and at one point the midwife told me to stop pushing but there was no way that was happening. Do you how hard it is to stop pushing with a child half out of your body?

I felt so good! We had done it naturally like we had wanted too!
As soon as she was out they went to lay her on my chest, only she didn't quite make it there. Her cord was so short she only made it to the lower part of my stomach. After cutting the cord they moved her to my chest and we tried to nurse.

She latched on right away and it was a very surreal moment. Nicolai and I stared in amazement at our daughter and at each other, practically speechless by what we had just done. After the lovely birthing of the placenta and 10 stitches...ick...it was Hannahs turn to be checked out.

They checked her head to toe and declared her perfect. Literally, not a birth mark or anything. She was flawless. She weighed 6 lbs 14oz and 18" long.

Nicolai hovered around the nurse and watched to make sure his baby girl was being well cared for while I got to eat after what felt like forever. After about a hour of relaxing, we were moved to the postpartum wing at around 7pm. They let us extend visiting hours a bit so we could see the friends and family that had been patiently waiting for us.

{lactation cookies+generally healthy for anyone cookies}

One of my favorite things about breastfeeding is that it gives me an excuse to eat these amazing oatmeal chocolate chip cookies! They are seriously SO good! This recipe makes a cookie similar to the brand Milk Makers. They have the cutest logo. It is an M, made to look like two boobs :) I have to say, I was skeptical that these wouldn't do anything, but I really am convinced they work!

1 cup butter 2 cups flour

1 cup packed brown sugar 1 tsp baking soda

1 cup sugar 4 tbsp brewers yeast

4 tbsp flax seed meal 1 tsp salt

5 tbsp water 3 cups quick oats

2 eggs as many mini chocolate chippies as you want :)

1 tsp vanilla

Here is the quick version:

oven @ 350

mix flax and water and let sit a few minutes

beat butter, sugar, and brown sugar together

add eggs and mix

add flax and vanilla and mix

combine flour, brewers yeast, baking soda and salt in a seperate bowl
gradually add to wet mixture

stir in oats and chocolate chippies

scoop onto cookie sheet in generous mounds, I like to use parchment paper underneath

bake for 12-15 mins

cool and enjoy a bounty of breastmilk :)

and if you arent a nursing Mom eat these anyway! Flax and brewers yeast are good for everyone!

Learning to breastfeed a child is not as easy as I thought. We have the hang of things now, but not without bleeding, cracking and the occasional hickey. Not only does Mom have to figure out what to do, but baby has quite the learning curve as well. As crazy as its been, its also been the greatest experience of my life thus far. Giving of yourself to your child in this way and being able to have your body produce what your child needs to survive, feels amazing. It bonds you to your child. I love the feeling of being able to comfort Hannah when no one else can, in a way that only I can. It is hard but once you figure out the tips and tricks, its totally do-able. Here are a few things that make life for a nursing Mom a little easier (if you have pregnant friends, take notes)...

Lactation cookies! These are delish and really do help with milk production. Look for the recipe coming tomorrow! These make a great gift for a new mom. When you bring a meal, why not bring dessert? I like to bake up half the batch and freeze the other half in cookie sized balls for easy baking. Include the recipe so they can make more later.

A Camelbak bladder! Yep! In case you didn't know, nursing Mom's have to drink a butt load of water and I always seem to get thirsty while I'm feeding Little Lou. My husband and I came up with an idea that uses a Camelbak so I could drink hands free while nursing. Keep an eye out for a diy project of this nature!

A cute diaper bag! When your nips hurt and you still feel fat and bloated, a girl needs to feel as cute as possible. Timi and Leslie diaper bags are sooo cute. I have two! I like them because they look like a cute purse but have all the functionality of a diaper bag. Heres a tip. They are a bit pricey but if you shop around you can get great deals. One of my bags I found on ebay for $60 (retails for $150!) and the other I found on Amazon warehouse deals for $50! (also retails at $150) So amazing!

A postpartum and nursing friendly workout plan! Mom's Into Fitness and Lindsay Brin are an amazing resource for new moms. She has dvds, free videos, downloads and books, all of which I recommend. She even has great prenatal workout dvds.

How about a cute nightlight for those late night feedings! I has this Circo LED mushroom night light and we love it. It charges during the day and we leave it on in our room at night. It is wireless so I can carry it with me to prevent stubbed toes in the dark :)

Need other gift ideas for new moms? How about..

+a comfy new pair of sweat pants

+cute new undies (but only if you are a close friend :)

+a potted plant to brighten up the house she will most likely be trapped inside for a few weeks

+meals, so she won't have to cook

+ a gift card for blockbuster and some snacks

And if you come to visit a new mom, always offer to do a load of dishes, laundry or some other chore! It is so helpful and frees mom up to do more important things, like showering her new little love with kisses. Cheesy but true :)

{Labor is not a Spectator's Sport, or How that Baby Came Whether we were Ready or Not.}

Howdy, Ballpoint+Pen Readers,

I am Hubs, known outside the crafty-blog-o-sphere as Nicolai, Ali's husband.
My lovely wife asked me to write a guest post for Ballpoint+Pen with
my impressions of "Labor Day".

Let me just tell you, for an expecting Papa expectations are about as
good as packing peanuts are nutritional when it comes to the
Child-Birthing process.

First, let's talk Labor Education. I like many supportive
daddies-to-be attended the mostly free pregnancy classes with my
lovely wife. Depending on your disposition, these classes are either a
great help by defining terms and procedures or a fire hose of
information that will drowned a expectant daddy leaving him with a
half glazed look accompanied with nods of agreement to whatever the
expectant mama wants.

I thought that the classes were helpful personally. If for no other
reason to have some form of reference for later. When you are in the
delivery room and someone says, "Pitocin" you at least can rest
assured that word has to with some kind of drug. You are now in the
right category for the conversation's context. You aren't as lost as
you could be. Also, forceps…. kind of scary to think about, worse to look at.

In all seriousness, its good to have a general understanding of whats
going to on to at least be informed on what birth-plan you will be
following. During Labor is no time to make decisions. Decide as much
before hand, down to what snacks to bring into the delivery room and
what drugs you are willing and not willing to allow them pump into
your temporarily plump mate.

Second, do what works for the both of you. We learned all kind of
bizarre techniques on pain management and whatnot. Visualization
therapy was the fun one. We closed our eyes and were supposed to think
of a happy place for our minds to go. By the end of this exercise we
were having our astronaut butler vacuum for land-mines in the living
room because sweeping is inefficient.

My imagination went a little too far, but we laughed a lot, and
that is what were thought would be our outlet: laughter. I would make
her laugh and we we could get through any contraction. That didn't
really happen.

Third, reality is not stranger than fiction, it's just way more
intense. I knew Labor would be painful for my Ali Lou, but I don't
think I was really prepared for how difficult it would be to see her
in pain. It was emotionally tiring to be that on edge for so long. She
was an amazing trooper and labored at home for about 12 hours before
we even called the hospital. I think the main thing that kept her
laboring at home for so long was sheer embarrassment. She didn't want
to be sent home for coming too soon. By 8:30am we went to Hospital and
she was already 4cm dilated. This is really what encouraged her to
really try and go completely natural. We made it this far, let's just
go all the way. In the end, it's taking each contraction at a time.
Work through that one, don't think about the next one. I kept telling
her that each contraction was the last one and everyone thought she
would punch me in the face, but she didn't.

Last little tidbit, when it comes time to push, let the professionals
do their job. My wife was amazing. She was the one that informed the
midwives it was time to push. Once they realized she was not kidding,
a whole army of battle ready nurses and midwives entered the room,
taking their battle positions. I felt a little under prepared in my
shorts and t-shirt. I just kind of got out their way. For all you
daddies to be who think you want to watch the baby head out of there,
you don't. You very really don't want want any of that. Your wife
needs you to hold her hand encourage her, not to make ghastly faces at
her when she is trying to work that baby out. This was the only time i
cried through the process. Seeing my lovely wife in such pain was not
easy, but seeing that little one be lifted up was an amazing reward.
Our little one's cord was too short, so it was more of a, "here you
go, she can lay on your stomach for a couple minutes." Oh, and side
note, the Placenta is every nightmare rolled up and covered in blood.
Don't look at it, you will either turn to stone or puke. Both are bad.

And here's your most amazing part men, cutting the cord. Only after
your blessing and snippy actions do we actually get to move on with
our lives. It's really our only important job through the whole thing.
Theoretically, you hold all the power. Men, we are blessed. We have
the easiest job getting that pregnancy started and the easiest job
finishing it up.

To wrap up this really long-winded post, I thank the Lord for a
complication free labor and delivery and for the wonderful gift my
little Hannah Lou is. I Love my little family.

Hey everyone, meet my Mom!

What it means to be a grandmother….

Growing up my grandmother was the most influential person in my young life. She always had time for me. She took me to church, the park, her doctor’s appointments and her hair appointments with her. She taught me to bake cookies, make ice cream and grow things. She sewed clothes for every doll I ever owned and even made my Betty Bride doll her own bra (how cool is that for a grandma to do)!

Each summer, even when my grandfather couldn’t get time off from his job as a firefighter, she loaded my brother and I into the car and hauled us up into the Sierra mountains to their little cabin all by herself. It wasn’t fancy, we didn’t take any expensive toys and the TV didn’t always work, but oh what fun we had up there. As we prepared meals during the day we kept the scraps in a metal bowl for the deer. In the evening, we pulled up our patio chairs to watch the sun set and the deer come out to see what we’d saved for them to eat that day. The next morning we headed to the pond with Wonder Bread torn in little bits to feed the fish. Life was simple but good!

But as awesome as all those wonderful times were, I think my favorite memory is of my grandmother, after saying our prayers…(Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep…..) and tucking us in, sitting on the edge of her own bed and reading her Bible. Night after night she was there when I went to bed and there when I got up late at night to tip toe down the hall to the bathroom, her Bible and her Daily Bread devotional in hand. I have that old Bible, underlined and well worn.

And now, 60 years later, I will pray for my own precious granddaughter. I will take her to the mountains and to the lake to feed the fish. I will make doll clothes and crochet little hats for her. We will plant flowers and play in the creek and I will love her and cherish every moment I have with her. And, I will thank my daughter every day for giving me the incredible gift of being a grandmother!

Chicken Pot Pies (yes multiple pies!)

Well hello there everyone! I’m Gemma from Sweet Life where I share all my favorite recipes and the occasional picture of my baby (you know, because I think he’s pretty fabulously cute). I’m so excited to be posting on Ali’s blog while she’s enjoying all those new baby cuddles (sigh).

So Ali, I hope you are enjoying the heck out of it, even though it’s hard and downright exhausting. And eating, DON’T FORGET TO EAT!

Which brings me to the subject of this post. When I had Lucas, I was really bad about taking care of myself those first few months. Showers were few and far between (shaving my legs, forget about it, thank God it was winter) and despite my excitement to jump back into the kitchen without getting nauseous, it didn’t happen for a while. I spent a lot of time eating microwaveable cheeseburgers and burritos my mother-in-law brought me from Costco. For the record, I owe her my life since I would have otherwise starved.

If I had been smart about it, I would have stocked my freezer with meals in advance. Having something you can simply pop in the oven is a godsend when you have a wee one in the house (and most likely in your arms just about every second of every day). These pot pies are fabulous, you can cook them straight from the freezer, they don’t require you to chop and peel an obscene amount of vegetables or even cook your own chicken, and the recipe is well worth the effort considering the number of meals you get out of it.

And did I mention they’re just about the most delicious thing in the universe? Because, they are.

Chicken Pot Pies
adapted from Annie's Eats
makes 6-8 individual pies
For the Filling:
3 Tbs. unsalted butter
1 medium yellow onion chopped
1 large russet potato, peeled and diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
8 oz. sliced button mushrooms
½ tsp. red pepper flakes
Salt and freshly gournd black pepper
1 purchased rotisserie chicken
2 cups frozen peas and carrots

For the Sauce:
½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 ½ cups chicken broth
½ cup heavy cream
Dash of hot sauce
Salt and freshly ground pepper

For the Crust:
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, chilled
3 cups all-purpose flour
10 oz. cream cheese, chilled
1 tsp. salt
¼ tsp. white pepper
1 large egg

Directions:
To make the filling, melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and potato to the pan, and sauté for about 5 minutes. Mix in the garlic, and cook for about 15 minutes more, until the potatoes are tender. While the vegetables are cooking, remove the skin from the chicken, pull the meat off the bones and shred or chop the chicken into bite-sized pieces. Once the vegetables are finished cooking, turn off the heat and mix in the frozen peas and carrots. Stir in the red pepper flakes, and season with salt and pepper to taste.
To make the sauce, melt the butter over medium heat in a large saucepan. Add the flour and whisk until smooth. Whisk in the chicken broth and cook over medium heat until it thickens to the consistency of a cream soup. Mix in the cream and hot sauce, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Off the heat, add the chicken and the vegetable mixture to the pot and stir until well combined. Spoon the mixture into 6-8 individual oven-safe dishes (such as ramekins).
Preheat the oven to 375°. To make the crust, cut the butter into 16 pieces. In the bowl of a food processor fitted with the metal blade, pulse the butter and flour until crumbly. Add the cream cheese, salt and pepper. Continue pulsing just until the dough forms a ball (Note: if you don’t have a food processor, a pastry cutter will work just fine, you’ll just need to put some elbow grease into it).
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured work surface. Use a floured rolling pin to roll the dough out to about ¼-inch thickness. Cut out dough rounds to be about 1½ inches larger than the diameter of your pot pie dishes. Lay the dough rounds on top of the individual dishes. Beat the egg with a whisk, and brush the tops of the dough rounds lightly with the beaten egg. (At this point, freeze whichever ones you don’t plan on eating right away. To heat from frozen bake at 400° for 50-60 minutes)
Place the pot pie dishes on a baking sheet for easy transfer in and out of the oven. Place in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown. Serve immediately.

Congratulations, Ali! In honor of the birth of Hannah, I thought it would be fun to share a few things I love about being a mom to a girl. I absolutely love my boys, but after three boys having a daughter is still such a novelty.
I love... -Having a real, live baby doll. I love shopping for Finley and then putting together the perfect outfit, complete with tights, ruffle shoes, and a hair bow or a headband. -Seeing her natural femininity. My daughter loves to play outside in the dirt with her brothers, but she also loves to mother her baby dolls, carry around a purse, and wear dresses. She's sweet and neat and gentle (and a little bit sassy). -Sharing with her things that I loved as a little girl. When I was pregnant with my third son I bought the two older boys a Cabbage Patch doll. To put it lightly, they weren't fans. I'm hoping Finley is more excited about the things that I loved as a little girl than my boys are. -Making girl stuff. I learned to sew right before Finley was born, so that I could sew all kinds of pretty outfits and dresses. While my sewing skills aren't really where I'd love them to be someday I've made her a few simple dresses, lots of hair things, a doll, bunting for her room, and other fun girly, girl things. -Thinking of the future. I can't wait for our mother/daughter shopping trips, tea parties, and mani/pedis. Of course, I'm her mom first, but I always tell Finley that she's my very best girlfriend (and, she is!). Thanks again for having me here! I'd love to have you come visit me!

{motherhood+the learning curve}

So far this wonderful thing they call motherhood is taking a toll on my body like nothing I have ever done :) Sacrifice is a huge part of parenting, and I am learning that first hand :) We are having so much fun with our little Hannah Lou! She brings us so much joy that it is easy to forget about the sleepless nights, blistered nips, and the raisinette I now know as my belly. It amazes me how we are created to do this, and how intuition kicks in. I feel like I just know what to do. I have learned a few things so far though...

-breast milk is like a magical serum...I dab it on Hannah's face when she scratches herself and it heals up so fast! I'd be lying if I said I hadn't put it on my our face when I got a little zit! It worked!

-once you get past the ouch-y stage, breastfeeding is the best thing ever! I have already lost half of my weight gain and the bonding it allows with your child is so sweet. Hannah loves to nurse and we call her the piranha because when I try to break her latch she tightens up her lips and locks it down! Its pretty hilarious.

-going through pregnancy and labor will strengthen your marriage and teach you so much about each other! Hubs and I are even closer than we were before and we were pretty close to begin with. Everyone talks about bonding with your child but the bonding my husband and I have experienced with one another has been just as sweet.

I am so excited that Ali and her sweet hubs are busy welcoming little Hannah into our big and budding world! Babies are the be all end of all of excitement, life changing and shaking it up! I can't wait to read about her adventures of being a new Mama and getting to know her little lady.

I am Autumn and I blog over at Playing House- Full Time. I have a little girl myself that is on the edge of two and a complete and total joy! We are having so much fun starting to really delve into toddlerhood and all the changes and growth that come along with it. Something new that we are into is cooking together. Some times it works well and other times it is a huge mess but it is nearly always a blast!

This is a fancy dessert I made for my book club awhile back and it is too easy not to share! And Nolie girl loved getting in on the whipped cream action towards the end.

Mini Chocolate Mousse Pie with Fresh Blackberry Whipped Cream

Start with homemade pie dough

        1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
        1/4 teaspoon salt
        1/2 cup butter, chilled and diced
        1/4 cup ice

    1.    In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in water, a tablespoon at a time, until mixture forms a ball. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate for 4 hours or overnight.
    2.    Roll dough out to fit a 9 inch pie plate. Place crust in pie plate. Press the dough evenly into the bottom and sides of the pie plate.

Then cut out small circles, I just used a large mug, in your rolled out dough. Push each small circle into a muffin tin and bake at 350 for about 10 minutes.

Filling

One package chocolate pudding
Whole milk
One cup heavy whipping cream

While your mini pie crusts cool prepare (box) pudding but with half the amount of milk it calls for. Pop this in the fridge and pull out your whipping cream. Whip one cup of whipping cream until stiff peaks form. Fold whipping cream into pudding and let sit in the fridge for 10 minutes. Then spoon it into your cooled pie crusts.

Topping
One cup heavy whipping cream
One pint fresh blackberries (could use any fresh berry!)

Whip your cream and when it begins to stiffen drop in berries one by one. It should turn your cream a light purple and begin to incorporate as the berries break down.
Dollop the whipped cream on top of the mini pies and enjoy!

Each time that I found out that I was expecting a new little bambino, one of the items that would automatically get added to the "need to buy before baby comes" list was a baby book!

I don't know how other women are about selecting their baby books, but I was kinda picky. I remember going through Barnes and Nobles book shelf, pulling out every baby journal or record book desperately searching for the perfect one. I usually walked away kinda bummed and frustrated.

After something like this occurred several times, while I was pregnant with my first, Alice, my mom offered an idea. She had come across a vintage baby book at an antique store and offered it to me. I was kinda skeptical at first... I didn't know if I wanted a "used" baby book. But when I realized it was in perfect condition, no writing in it, and FULL OF GORGEOUS PICTURES from the 1950s, I was sold.

For my next little girl, Elsie, I found an Eloise Wilkin's baby book. You know the illustrator of all those chubby legged, dimple-cheeked little babies and kids often in Golden Books? Well, she's one of my favorite illustrators... so that was a done deal. That and the fact that the cover was turquoise...perfect!

For my third baby girl, Sadie, I had bought two other baby books and returned them, before my mom came to the rescue once again with another vintage baby book. It was very similar to Alice's and I loved it.

When it came to baby number 4, who was a boy, I knew exactly which baby book to get. You see, I'd been searching the web and book stores for 6+ years now! In my searches, I had come across a sweet little vintage inspired baby book that was precious! ...it was filled with simple, adorable graphics and vintage styled fonts... but it was yellow, green, brown, and a bit of turquoise. Just not girly enough for those three other dolls of mine :) But it was perfect for my boy!!

So if you're a mama expecting a baby and you're kinda picky... I've got three suggestions for you:

2. The Eloise Wilkin Baby Journal by Golden Books
3. or GO VINTAGE! ... either hit your local antique mall or go online to Ebay or Etsy. You can find them pretty reasonably priced: $12-$20

Hello Ballpoint + Pen readers! My name is Mandy, and I run a blog called "She Breathes Deeply." I was so honored to be asked to be here with you sweet readers today. Ali is such an amazing blogger, a creative genius, and let's be honest... Ali is the cutest Mama around. I am so excited for Ali, her husband, and their sweet little bundle of cuteness!

Before I get started, allow me to tell you a little about myself. I am a tattoo wearing, tea drinking, fashion loving, christian yoga practicing, wife to a wonderful man named Kyle, and mama to my favorite little girl, Lily.

Lily is almost 7 months old now, so I am fairly new to this whole "mama-hood" thing. But, at the same time, everything is still fresh in my mind on becoming a new mom. While I am still forever navigating the ropes on parenting, below are some things I wish some one had filled me in on when I first had Lily.

1.) Give yourself a break.

Having a baby is hands down one of the most MONUMENTAL experiences of your life. Yes, your body needs to heal and rest afterwards... but you need to rest emotionally as well. For goodness sakes, you just grew a human being for 9 months, and then in one big crescendo- you pushed that human being out of your body. Yeah, it is a little emotional to say the least.

The first few weeks (months, maybe?) after I had Lily I felt like my emotions and hormones were all out of whack. Goodness gracious, I cried over everything- including spilled milk (ESPECIALLY if the spilled milk was spilled breast milk). So, all this to be said... expect yourself to take time to recuperate after such a feat as being pregnant and giving birth! You have earned a good cry or two (or twenty-five.)

2.) Allow others to help you.

If someone wants to bring dinner, let them! Stay off your feet, cuddling that sweet baby of yours as much as possible.

3.) Take pictures of everything.

I cannot say this enough... The itsy bitsy stage of baby-hood FLIES by. Record it in every way you can, as much as possible.

4.) Thou shall not compare.

It is so hard, but PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not compare yourself to other mother's around you (or in the blogging world). If they appear like the "perfect" mother, they most likely are lying. Okay... that is a little harsh... But I promise you- every mother around you is learning as they go. You are the perfect mother to YOUR baby. No one else could do your job. Yeah, you will make mistakes- you can expect that. But, remember- there is only ONE you for your little bundle of cuteness.

5.) Be kind to your body.

I think all new mom's think this, and I am as guilty as any of them, but for some reason we all think once the baby has popped out- we will be right back in our skinny jeans. And... for a few of you that may be true, but the majority of us- it is going to take some time! I am very health conscious, and exercise motivated- but seven months after having a baby, my body is still hanging on to those last 11 pounds of baby weight. Having a very active little one, it is very complicated trying to find time to work out. But, once again, I am learning to give myself a break and be PROUD of my body for making and delivering a baby.

7.) Realize your heart will never be the same.

This may be the biggest point I can make. This may not happen the moment you pop that baby out, but be prepared for your heart to jump right out of your body, and never return. When Lily was born, everything in my heart and life turned upside down. I never realized I could love a little human as much as I love her. Becoming her mama has been the best and hardest thing I have ever done. Sometimes I think my heart will explode with joy when she grins at me... or when she falls asleep on my chest... or when she reaches for me to hold her. My heart will never be the same.

I've been thinking a lot the last few days about what I would write about, what was pressing on my heart string enough to share with you guys. Ali gave me the freedom to talk about whatever I wanted to...but in honor of the present events (welcome baby Hannah!) and because it is really what my life is all about, I wanted to talk about

motherhood.

Our baby boy joined us in September of '09 and our world changed forever.

So many people tell you that you will never be the same, you nod and say that you understand but you don't, at least not fully.

I knew I loved my baby,

I just didn't know how much and how completely I would or could love that tiny little human.

I knew it would be hard and challenging,

I just didn't know how truly hard it would be, how many tears would be shed when the baby is screaming, your tired and don't know what to do anymore

I know it would change my life forever.

I didn't know how much of an overhaul that really was or how willing I would be to just let it happen.

I knew that a child was something my husband and I wanted,

but I didn't know how much it would change us, for the better, and actually bring us that much closer together.

Motherhood

I don't think anyone or anything can prepare you for its beauty

or for its not so pretty times.

Its hard.

Its dirty work

It will make you cry.

It will break you down.

but...

God has blessed me, beyond comprehension, by allowing me to care for and raise one of his little miracles. Its my job to dedicate myself to that, to my son, because that's the choice I made when my son was given to me.

Being a mom is a privilege and responsibility.

Its not to be taken lightly, its something you dive into with both feet and give everything you have...and then some.

My baby is Gods gift to me and raising him well is my gift to God.

Motherhood is a beautiful, messy thing...

and, as a woman, it is the greatest thing I will ever do.

hello there! i'm sarah, mama to lottie grace and wife to the most handsome fellow i ever did know, kyle. i blog over here at her sea of love. many thanks to sweet ali for having us take part in keeping her little blog home up and running while she enjoys her first few weeks with her little one! such an incredibly joyous time!

there was so much i was expecting of motherhood that didn't happen, and much i didn't expect that did happen. i could write novels on this journey after only being six months into it. i decided i'd share some of what i feel was the most helpful advice i heard along the way, and other things we learned on our own!

one things many mama's don't realize in this stuff-obsessed world is that baby doesn't need much! we live in a 700 sq ft home and still have plenty of room for the little lady to roam and wander. we have never found the need for a changing table (the bed and waterproof pads will do) and we didn't even consider a dresser for her (our closet and boxes under the bed work just as well!). as time moves on, these things and others will become a priority, but for now, buying only the necessities have been both kind on our wallets and the cleanliness of our home.

trust your mama instincts. after charlotte got here, many friends (and even people who didn't know us personally) were pushing their parenting skills on us, and we were even told some of what we were doing was wrong. i firmly believe that the best way to learn your parenting skills is by parenting on your own. of course, kind advice is always welcome! but the critical words do sting. if your way of parenting is unlike someone else's, it doesn't mean they or you are wrong! we all have our own ways of raising our little ones. we learn by succeeding and failing on our own. always do what in your heart feels right and what you believe it's best for you and your family.

one thing that has been been a struggle of mine, is letting go of the mess. i usually try to clean up the burp cloths & onesies that we've gone through that day after my kyle & charlotte are asleep. sometimes i get carried away and get in 'cleaning mode', and start scrubbing and wiping out everything, finding myself crawling in bed hours later. let me tell you, cleaning it all doesn't feel half as good as jumping into bed with the ones you love most and letting it wait. it is so worth it.

lastly, bring on the baby talk. kyle and i were the couple who swore never to do the whole 'goo-goo ga-ga' ordeal. we are now the couple making the most absurd sounds and faces, about fifty times more ridiculous than 'goo-go ga-ga'. but charlotte's response is hysterical, and i can now proudly talk baby talk to her wherever we go. our cool-level may be a bit lower in strangers eyes, but we're pretty awesome in our little lady's eyes.

Marla of Today is Mine

my sweet hubs & i went to target to create a baby registry. we entered our info and walked to the desk to get our 'gun'. i handed sweet hubs the gun [every gal knows guys only willingly participate in registering because a gun is involved]. we headed to the baby corner and wandered up and down a couple aisles. and i began to cry. i was so totally overwhelmed [and there may have been a pregnancy hormone or two involved] ...and i was only in target. there are entire stores created just for babies. we survived the registry and i thought i would share a few of our favorite things from the first few months of parenthood.

01. Hooter Hiders nursing cover & 02. BABYBJÖRN carrier.

01. i'm all about nursing in public. i am most comfortable using a cover and the hooter hider works well for me. i love the little peek-a-boo at the top and the assortment of designs and colors to choose from.

02. our babybjorn carrier was fantastic for walks the first few months. we used it on a trip to nyc and i'm pretty sure our sweet tot slept the entire time she was in it. now that she's a little heavier, we find it more comfortable to wear her in a backpack carrier.

03. Leachco Comfy Caddy

we don't have a lot of room for storage in our bathroom. this bath pad was the perfect solution for us. we squeeze the water out after a bath, leave it in the tub to dry and then hang it on a towel rack after it's dry. it's also a great pillow for my back when i take a bath!

04. Chicco KeyFit 30 Infant Car Seat

i did a lot of research on car seats and purchased the chicco keyfit 30. it worked out so well for us. the infant insert was perfect for us as our little ladycakes was just under 6 pounds when she came home and didn't grow very quickly for the first couple months. the base makes it a snap to get her in and out of the car.

05. Crinkle Book

we didn't register for any toys. ...read above paragraph about pregnant girl crying. i didn't even know where to start. however, this actually worked out really well for us as friends and family purchased toys that were favorites for their little ones. this crinkle book turned out to be an absolute favorite for our little lady and was given to me by an experienced mama who knew what worked!

06. aden + anais Muslin Wraps

these are expensive but super cute and practical. they are very soft and hold up well to washing. these were absolutely perfect for swaddling the first few weeks. we also used them to cover her carseat when she was a newborn, lay them on the floor to play on or do diaper changes, use as a lightweight blanket, etc. i LOVE these things. you may also dangle your baby from a branch with these if you wish...

07. Graco Pack 'n Play

i had big plans to find a cute bassinet for our bedroom to keep our new little babe in. i was still on the hunt for that perfect bassinet and little babe decided to enter the world a month early. thankfully my husband's co-workers had given us the pack 'n play and it worked perfectly with the bassinet attachment. it's also very easy to pack up and we used it on a camping trip as seen above.

08. Boppy Pillow

i wonder what mama's did before there was boppy?! this is the perfect pillow for nursing. it's also great for tummy time, learning to sit up, and saturday morning concerts with daddy.

09. Charlie Banana Diapers

we love our cloth diapers! we are saving a ton of money, keeping hundreds of diapers out of the landfill, and our little lady has never gotten a diaper rash. i wrote a bit more about our cloth diaper experience here. [first picture above is bum genius artist series.]

10. Bumbleride Flyer

this stroller is compatible with our car seat, which was great when she was teeny tiny. it's lightweight and the handle is reversible so we can choose if she is facing us or facing out. it reclines all the way back, which comes in handy when she falls asleep on walks. we actually found this stroller on craigslist and got a great deal. hopefully this helps a new mama or two!

That had me thinking about the first few weeks with my son after he was first born. Boy, were those rough! I didn't have one of the magical little newborns that sat there and cooed! He was a screamer from the beginning! The first few weeks were definitely a shock for me! But, interestingly enough- everyone was right... things got better.

So Ali, I hope you're hanging in there during this time. And if you're struggling or having a hard time (or if you're blissfully happy!), just remember that this time is so short! Yes it's cliche, but all those random strangers (me) telling you that it'll go by in an instant- are right.

elbow hearts+onesie creations

{I have had this project on my to do list for a loooong time and was reminded of that when this lady recently posted a little diy about it! I really like how mine turned out :) I've pretty much been wearing it nonstop!}

{As you can see here, my belly isn't getting any smaller. I am trying not to be too much of a grouch when I am uncomfortable but my patience is dwindling. I just want to meet my little girl and get the ouchie part over with! Not working is driving me a little crazy too! Hubs keeps trying to tell me that taking a nap or laying down for a bit isn't lazy, its restful! I just feel bad being at home doing nothing, while he is at work slaving away. He says that growing our child isn't nothing, ok sure, but being idle is hard for me. This could mean more projects popping up around here! I've definitely been busy working on our home and making tons of fun things for my baby girl, I just need to post them}

{Keep your fingers crossed for me that Hannah is an early bird, cuz I can't wait for her to wear her onesie to match my patches! Aww I know so cute! :) Part of the fun in having a girl I suppose. {Hubs and I were having a little walking date downtown the other night and we ducked into this funky used bookstore below our apartment. I found this charming little cookbook and was super tempted to buy it, strictly because of the cute cover, of course. A lot of the recipes were weird, and some of the ingredients I hadn't even heard of :) I think I need to sharpen my culinary skills and broaden my palette. I'm the girl that orders the same thing when we go out. Usually some form of soup, salad, or chicken...exciting right?}

{So I have been dying for a pair of Darlingtonia Mocs for...oh...forever, especially now that my feet have decided to swell to the size of baby hump back whales! Sadly I have been unable to shell out the dough, so I came up with a temporary substitute! These were fairly simple to make...needed some help from my Daddio, as I was to much of a weakling to weave the toe part. You really have to pull those suckers tight! Over all though, it is soooo simple. I used this kit and it includes everything you need. If you can find a thin enough leather cord that would probably look better than the nylon cord it comes with. I bought leather but couldn't fit it though the holes! Anyway try it out! It's a fun little weekend project!}

This has by far been one of the easiest, yet my favorite, project I have done in awhile! And I have been craftin it up! Let me tell you! Nesting is in full force over in these parts! You may remember my thrift haul post yesterday, where I showed you the rose picture I bought. This is what I did with it!

First I want to mention that this is not completely original idea. It was inspired by this little lady. So, to get started you will need:

1. an old painting you dont mind messing around with

2. acrylic craft paint on the color of your choosing

3. paint for your frame if you want to paint it

4. brushes

5. your template...I found mine here but you can always make your own

First I printed out my template and before cutting it out I reenforced it with clear contact paper. Then cut out the deer and lightly attach it to your painting. I used a double sided tape but make sure to check that what you use won't wreck your painting! Because the deer antlers are pretty thin, I had to paint carefully as to not get paint under the template.

When you paint be sure to move from the inside of the template out with your strokes. If you paint toward the template the ends will lift and you won't get a crisp line.
I also painted the brown frame it was in, white for a nice bright contrast. Let your masterpiece dry, and carefully peel off your template. Mine wasn't totally dry when I did this part and it was fine. So if you are like me and totally impatient, go for it!

So, that's really all there is to it! It is one of those projects where everyone sees it and thinks your brilliant until you explain how easy it is :) enjoy! Have a great weekend guys!

{major thrift haul madness}

Last week marked, possibly, my greatest thrifting victory of all time! My friend Georgia and I went to "the bins" at one of the areas largest thrift stores and scored big time! Wvery meticulously packed our cart and betwen the two of us, everything was $20! Not to mention, she paid for everything! This magnificent load of treasure cost me $0! Can't beat that!

Among my favorite items were...a huge roll of kraft paper, some cute wrapping paper, a beautiful green ceramic planter, really cool vintage looking tins, and wait for it....a HUGE roll of woodgrain contact paper! I literally gasped when I found it!

There were so many cute odds and ends! I got this realy neat yellow glass planter thing, which I love. Some cute old measuring spoons, a whole loads of picture frames which I have plans for, and another "hobnail-ish" candle stick holder...now I have 3.

I literally must have found almost everything that has been on my thrift list, in one trip. I got a few cute plates, an amazing white platter, and a white colander to plant something in.

But I think one of my favorite finds of the day was this vintage rose "paint-by-number-ish" picture and frame! Check back tomorrow to see what I did with it! It's pretty cool if you ask me!

Do you ever feel like you just want to read everyone else's blog but have no motivation to wrote on your own? I do! That's how I've been feeling lately! The little boy I nanny for was mad at me for not letting him do something the other day, so he put on his meanest, frustrated face and yelled..."You're fat!" haha! It was pretty ridiculous. His sister looked horrified for a minute and then said "Only cuz there's a baby in her tummy! Sweet girl. I'm sure it is clear which child I favor :) Just kidding!}

{Hannah Louise}

I found these adorable wooden letters at the craft store about a week ago and had to get them. I painted them and plan to mount them over the changing table :) I think they will be cute!

So I've had a few inquiries about Hannah's name, how we decided on a name, and what the meaning behind it is. I thought I would just share a little bit.

We started out just brainstorming names we liked..some of the favorites were Faye, Avery, Ava, Naomi, and Miriam. All of these ended up being veto-ed due to lack of meaning, they were becoming too popular, or they just didn't feel right. Hannah was another name we liked, and we knew we wanted the middle name to be Louise. My middle name is Louise, named after my mother...and strangely enough, Nicolais moms middle name is Louise, so it is a family name on both sides. I think I want my next little girls middle name to be Dean after my Dad's mom. So...we narrowed down the options to Hannah and Faye. We wavered back and forth for awhile, but for me Faye Louise just didn't sound right...it didn't flow properly...so that's how we settled on

Hannah Louise Pedersen.

Hannah means grace or favor in Hebrew and Louise means famous warrior.

the hunt: perfect chicken pot pie

I genuinely believe that there is nothing as delicious or comforting as a warm chicken pot pie. I recently have been reunited with this classic dish after having a piece with my friend Grace. It was sooo good! Poor hubs has been begging me to make said dish for just about our whole first year or marriage. I also have about 5 friends having babies in the next couple months and this is a great freeze and heat recipe. That brings me to my latest hunt...the best chicken pot pie recipe in all the land!

Apart{ment} of my heart: summer wreath

Some of you may remember the fall wreath I made awhile back...well up until about 2 days ago it was still on my front door. Needless to say I was a little sick of it and wanted something a bit more seasonally appropriate :) I dug through my craft closet and just threw one together out of the things I already had. I really liked the finished product and it was super fast and easy!

I just started with a simple straw filled wreath. They come wrapped in plastic and I have learned from experience that you do not want to unwrap them or else you will have a fat mess on your hands.

First I took a scrap of one of my favorite vintage sheets and cut it into strips to wrap around for my base. I probably used about 1 yd of fabric. I just rough cut the sides...no measuring, no precision cuts. Just kinda winged it. Instead of hot gluing like I normally would, I used sewing pins, that way i can always re use the wreath if I want to. It was also much faster and cleaner.

When I made it all the way around the wreath I hide the pins under a flat of fabric for a clean finish.

Then I cut out felt circles in various sizes and colors. I tried to layer them so they gradually got smaller and I could stack them into funky little flower like arrangements.

Add on a few little hand cut leaves...

Then I used white pins to contrast the black felt, and secured the flowers to the wreath in an arrangement that I liked!

Lastly I looped some grey yarn at the top so I could hang it and...done!

I really like how it turned out! Everytime I walk up to my front door it makes my heart happy :)

Hi sweet baby Hannah,

You are getting so big now! You were 12 oz at our last visit..creeping up on a whole pound :)

You have been much more quiet this week, which makes me think you are sleeping a lot and working on a massive growth spurt! You and I got a summer job with a new family today! Hooray! Now Momma will have a little money to buy you cute things and decorate your room!

Keep growing little Hannah! We have lots of plans for you baby girl!

Apart{ment} of my heart: oh, hello!

{I've been in desperate need of some new art all over our little apartment, but especially in the bathroom. A few months ago I bought a couple of huge quilting hoops. They are basically huge embroidery hoops. The one I used for this project was 23" in diameter. The only other materials needed are material to embroider, embroidery floss, a needle, hand drawn pattern and a washable marker.}

{First I used a pencil to sketch out my design. I just wrote oh, hello in cursive. Then, outline your design in sharpie so it will show through your fabric. I wanted to spend as little as possible on the project so I used 1 yard of muslin, which I purchased for about $2. Muslin works really well because it is thin and was really easy to trace onto. If you are hanging this piece on a dark colored wall you may want to consider a thicker fabric. Mine will be on a white wall so it didn't matter.}

{Once you have your pattern how you want it, just trace it onto your fabric using a washable marker. You can usually find them in the embroidery section at most craft stores. Then just pop your fabric in your hoop and start sewing away. I would suggest using a smaller embroidery hoop rather than trying to juggle the huge 23" hoop :) If you need help with embroidery stitches there are lots of resources online but I will also be posting a tutorial for a basic split stitch which I pretty much use for everything!}

{succulent love}

{One super simple and inexpensive way I have found to spruce up my space, is to have lots of plants. I love succulents in particular, because they are easy to take care of and you can usually buy the little potted succulents for under $2. Plus there are tons of different kinds. This last time i loaded up on new plants, I almost sprung for a cactus but I might be a little afraid of them!}

{One really important thing to remember when keeping succulents is to make sure they can drain any excess water. I am lazy and usually leave them in the little plastic pots they come in, then just use any cute little pot like things I find around the house. I used mini teacups, a candle votive, and a few actual pots that I had on hand. Also be sure to not over water them. I typically just put a little water in the teacup and set the plant pot with drainage holes in the water and it just absorbs it all. This also allows the water to make it to the roots.}

{I love to wake up to my little plants :) They make me happy! I have them all sitting together in top of a shelf in the bedroom under the only window in our whole apartment! Yes, we have one window...and skylights, but just only window...ehhhhh!}

{This weekend I went to a super cute baby shower for my friend Amber. We decorated onesies with iron on fabric and it was so much fun! They turned out so cute! I have a lot of very creative friends. Personally I got a little carried away and made 3 different little outfits! My favorite was a little owl that I scrapped together and then cut out letters and wrote HOOT on the butt! It was pretty sweet. Anyway I kept a few scraps to play with at home and made these little onesies for my Hannah girl! My friend Chelsea inspired this idea when she made them at the shower.}

{cute, right?}

{All you need is fabric in the print of your choice. Chelsea had ironed on a fuse-able fabric onto the back. Then just sketch the design you want on the paper backing and cut out.}

{When sketching my design i laid my fabric on the onesie and traced the shape I wanted right around the collar to ensure it would be the right size.Then peel the paper backing and iron onto your onesie.}

{I used some of the extra to cut out little hearts to stick on there too.}

{Overall I think they turned out pretty stinkin cute :) My little girl is going to have quite the wardrobe by the time she makes her appearance!}

{anniversary=ice cream, coffee, and Ikea}

{Before heading out of town, Mom and I had our weekly photo and coffee date! I really liked how this weeks pictures turned out! I worn one of my favorite jackets, that Nicolai's mom gave me a couple years ago.}

{After driving to Berkeley we ran across the Berkeley Farmers Market and picked up some super delicious cherries and white peaches! The market was fairly small but full of really awesome vendors! They even had a ranch there that was selling free range meat, which I don't see often at markets!}

{Afterward we drove over to find The Cheese Board Collective where we heard they have amazing pizza...which they did :) They only make one type of pizza each day, and you just choose whether you want a whole, half or slice of pizza. We had one with Roma tomatoes, feta and mozzarella cheeses, lemon juice and zest, and a little cilantro. It was really good and the place was packed! Like line out the door packed!}

{After lunch we thought a coffee sounded good. It was a weird weather day..it was sunny one minute and then drizzling the next. We walked down the street and decided to try out The French Hotel, which we later discovered was actually a hotel and not just a cleverly named coffee shop. Nicolai insisted he needed a brownie so we got one of those too :) Over all it was a good find. Around 3 we went to check into our hotel and take a little nap. Then we went for a late dinner at P.F. Changs! We decided to go there because we had dinner there when we were on our honeymoon. It was really good. I love their chicken lettuce wrap appetizers! Sooo yummy!}

{Sunday morning we woke up and found out continental breakfast at our hotel just meant it was healthy, not free. So we decided to forgo the over priced mediocre food for a better option. We were sent to try Local 123 by our friend Dave, and boy was it good. They had amazing coffee and super nice staff but we were really impressed with breakfast. It probably helped that we were super hungry! For breakfast we ordered the two poached eggs on herb butter sourdough. This was amazingly delicious! I'm not even a big egg person but I loved it.}

{After checking out of our hotel our first stop was for ice cream...yes before lunch :) We decided to try out Ici. It is an ice creamery in Berkeley that was to die for! They make their own cones and all the ice cream is made in house. They have really interesting flavors too. I tried the lemon vanilla which was super great and Nicolai had the maple candied bacon...not my thing but he loved it!}

{Later on we headed to Ikea where we bought a new bed, bookcase, and some odds and ends before heading home...oh and we had lunch of course :) Overall it was an amazing weekend full of love and joy...cheesy but true :) My face in that last picture sums it up I think :)}

{top secret cinnamon toast}

{As promised here is my top secret family recipe for cinnamon toast! It's hardly a recipe but there is a definite technique that I feel we have perfected. When I was little my Dad always used to make it for me, and it was never the same if anyone else made it...sorry Mom :) So, it's pretty basic.

Toast your bread. Growing up we always used that whole wheat Roman Meal bread in the orange bag, now I use a sprouted wheat toast...that way it redeems some amount of nutritional value to my breakfast! As soon as your toast pops you want to butter it immediately so all your butter melts into the bread, and don't be stingy, load that sucker up! Then plop down about a tablespoon...yes a tablespoon...of white sugar. Typically I use raw sugar but white is what we always used growing up and it just melts into the butter a lot easier. Then sprinkle your cinnamon onto the pile of sugar. This part is very important! When we were kids we always looked for the white polka dot in the middle of the toast, cuz that how Dad always did it! You can add as much cinnamon as you like but at least cover your sugar with a thin layer. Then start spreading the sugar around on your toast. You will end up with too much sugar, just shake it off in the sink and if it's really ridiculous scrap a little. Then eat your scrumptious creation!}

{The other day at the thrift store I found this cute little Osterizer mini-blend container and lid. I got a fun idea and decided to turn it into a cinnamon and sugar shaker for making cinnamon toast! I love it! It turned out so cute, so I thought I'd share! I had a lot of help from my Daddio! He did all the hard work :) My Dad is an architect and he is very precise when he does projects! First he laid out a template in AutoCad and printed it out. Since most of use don't have or know how to use AutoCad, you could also use a sharpie to mark where you want to make your holes.}

{I'm not sure what size drill bit we ended up using but one that's fairly small but you also what to make sure it won't be to big and you end up with a flood of sugar...not that that's so bad :)}

{Again, my Dad has a great set up for these kinds of projects, so we used his drill press for this project, but a normal drill would work just fine as well.}

{If you used a template, layer it on top of your lid and drill on the spots indicated, or on the sharpie dots you made. I chose to make my holes to the side so as not to drill right though the cute little chef fairy girl!}

{After you drill your holes you end up with some rugged edges that are pretty sharp and would probably end up collecting a lot of sugar crusties.}

{Use a dremel tool with a flat grinding stone or abrasive wheel to file down the rough edges and smooth everything out.}

{My lid had a wax-y ring around the inside that collect a lot of the metal shards and dust, so if yours has that you will want to scrub it out really well to get rid of as much of that as possible.}

{Look how cute! :) My Dad is a genius! When I was little my Dad used to make cinnamon toast for me and there is a real science to it! Let me tell you! Check back Wednesday and I'll share the top secret family recipe!}

{So I turned 25 last November and made a to do list for the next year. I thought I'd share my progress so far...I think I'm actually doing pretty well!}

1. ~~try for baby again~~...well i bakin a bun so I think I've achieved this goal :)

2. finish granny square afghan...I've made a decent sized stack of squares

3. sew a vintage sheet quilt...still collecting the sheets for this one

4. ~~get up to 150 followers on the blog or more~~!...so far beyond that! Thanks guys!

5. ~~make reading list~~...done! I'll post it as proof :)

6. pay off credit card!...its under $1000 now! almost there! can't wait!

7. ~~plan a 30th birthday bash for Nicolai~~..did it! and it was so much fun!

8. work up to taking sponsors on the blog...coming soon I hope :)

9. create a line for the etsy shop...i've sorta abandoned my etsy dreams but who knows..one day maybe

10. learn basic html and blog design...not really but trying

{So 9 out of 25 so far and 6 are partially done or soon to be complete! Not to bad. I have until November 8th to do the rest of these, so we'll see how i do!}

Apart{ment} of my heart v.1

{When you are both on a budget and trying to redecorate, a good rule to live by is use what you have. I painted this giant canvas with birds on it when I was a senior in high school, and its been living with me ever since. Recently I have been feeling like my style and taste have totally changed and I just didn't really like it anymore. I needed new art for the apartment and had something in mind. So I went looking for inspiration and found this...

..on Apartment Therapy. It was perfect! One of the goals I have in redoing our apartment is to incorporate more color. Previously I had collected a lot of dark wood furniture and liked a lot of grey, tan, black, and other boring neutral colors. Now since we have a baby on the way, I really want to liven things up I am switching over to a white palette with pops of color! So much more fun! I ended up creating this piece but in a lovely shade of green!}

{It was actually a bit harder than it looks! For this project you need lots of patience and some time.

Gather your supplies...
+white paint (I used acrylic craft paint)
+other colored paint of your choosing
+brushes
+masking or painters tape
+a ruler or measuring tape (I use a flexible sewing tape measure)
+pencil

{Start by painting over your previous design with your white paint if need be. It may take a few coats. It is helpful to start by painting over only the darkest areas the first one or two times you coat. Then once completely dry and covered, measure your canvas' height and width. Here's where you have to do a little math...divide up your canvas to see how many lines you want to have and how thick they will end up being. ex: I ended up doing eight 4" stripes. I figured out I would have 5 peaks going across, and measured in 4" increments up and down each side of my canvas. I hope this makes some kind of sense, its really hard for me to explain. Basically just measure out your pattern however you want it :)
Next you want to tape off your lines so that they are nice and clean. Keep all the tap inside the stripes that are to remain white, so that you are free to paint inside the green spaces. After the paint have fully dried, gently and slowly peel off the paint. I accidentally pulled off some paint and had to do a few little touch ups! And that's about it!

I'm really excited to hang this piece over our bed after I redo our room! Sidenote: One reason I have not posted a project in awhile is because my pictures have been (in my opinion) poor quality, due to terrible lighting in our apartment! I used to have amazing natural light in my house but now that we have moved, our apartment has only one window and it's in the bedroom, and we have two huge skylight sin the living room but then I only get light from directly above! Anyway, it makes for bad pictures and I wondered if any of you photographers out there had any advice for little ol' me?

{Well after almost a week of being sick I am finally feeling more like myself! Hooray! Sadly I had the stomach flu starting Wednesday night and it lasted until Friday! Since then I have been trying to get my stomach back to normal for eating food and other such things :) This morning I ate breakfast as normal, and even felt hungry! I just ate what sounded good, instead of having to find something I might be able to stomach! Isn't being sick the worst! I remember being in grade school and praying to God that I could be sick just for a few days, to get out of school. What was I thinking! Having the flu is no fun anyway but having it while pregnant is the pits. It's totally nerve wracking! I was worried about getting dehydrated the whole time! Luckily the advise nurse I talked to was sure nice and reassuring. Anyway that wraps up this update of the 2011 Barf-a-thon. In other news I didn't get to post the first Apart{ment} of my heart yet because I was sick, so you can expect that later today or tomorrow. I'm excited to get started. I'm still trying to get back on schedule after being derailed by the first trimester of baby cooking so hopefully you'll being seeing more activity around these parts soon! {make do monday: the b word...budgeting}

{When it comes to budgeting, I think most of us fall into two main categories. Those who relish each penny saved and those just plain feel deprived and miserable when penny pinching. I think there are also those who like to swing between the two depending on the day. That would be me :) For the most part lately, I have been very spending conscious and loving it! Hubs and I recently looked over our spending and quite honestly were appalled at the amount of money had been wasted through out the month. As we get closer to baby coming and me staying at home, we are really cinching up the purse strings, partly so we can save as much as possible, and so we can get some new furniture and prepare for our little one, but also to start learning how to live on a verrry tight budget. The motivation of staying at home with my child and not having to work really helps me to become creative and find ways to use what we already have, or upcycle as much as possible. I'm actually pretty proud of how well we have been doing this month! I started tracking our spending in a ledger and hubs put a new cute little cash system keeper thingy in my Easter basket! It has been great! We are doing a cash system for groceries and it has been working so well! I went to the produce stand for this weeks produce and had $18 left of my budget for the 2 week pay period and wouldn't you know it...everything I picked out to buy rang up at $17.99!! Heck yeah!}

{Sadly, budgeting does mean there will be less of this in my life...(see the beautiful latte above :) Not none, just less! But that's ok. i feel like I am already becoming a mother and sacrificing the things I feel are unnecessary or wasteful. And I'm totally ok with that! It feels good to be wise with our money and to be good stewards. It allows us to trust that the Lord will provide for our needs even when we can't see how He will do it! So on this note I want to say that I hope to be sharing more in the near future about our budgeting journey and share little tips and secrets I learn along the way! I recently came across the Tightwad Gazette series of 3 books and they are amazing! This lady is hardcore! I don't think I'll be quite as committed as she is, but it is totally inspiring and full of some really creative ideas! One of my first little ventures has been to save all our containers from yogurt and such. We needed tupperware but I didn't want to spend the moo-lah. It's the little things like that, that really help in the long run! I also have grand plans to redo our apartment on a very tight budget and so far have done a few projects with stuff I had tucked away in my craft closet!

{Here is a peek of one of those projects! So with that said I want to introduce a new feature I am excited about! I haven't lived in an apartment in quite some time and am in the process of turning this weird windowless place into our home. So to document this transformation and share some ideas with my fellow apartment dwellers, I will be writing "Apart{ment} of my heart" every Thursday. I'm pretty excited about this and I'm excited to see how our little home turns out! I am in the process of documenting before pictures to share through out the transformation. So stay tuned friends!}

{Believe it or not we had our 3rd ultrasound in 2 weeks yesterday! The nurse we had was amazing! She did the ultrasound just for fun and so we could hear the heartbeat while Nicolai was there with me! She printed us a bunch of pictures and she got some amazing photos! This first one shows the baby's spine so clearly!}

{make do monday: vanilla extract}

{homemade vanilla extract}

{This is actually pretty ridiculously easy. Directions are barely required. All you really need is vanilla beans (I used 3-4) vodka, and a bottle to mix in. I used a pop top bottle from Ikea.}

{Simply make a small slice down the middle of the vanilla beans length wise to open them up. Don't cut all the way through. Place the beans in the bottle and fill with vodka to cover your beans.}

{Your concoction needs to sit for at least 2 weeks before you notice a significant difference. Every few days give it a good little shake to mix things up. You'll not the extract getting darker the longer it sits. Store your homemade vanilla extract in a cool dark place. It should last a long long time. As you use your extract you can top it off with vodka as you run low and use the same beans for awhile. if you notice it isn't as strong anymore just add a new vanilla bean or two. It's really that easy and it smells soooo good! Enjoy!}

{finally...a productive day!}

{Here is little baby Pedersen! The doctor had me go to Radiology for a "big" ultrasound to try to determine my correct due date and I was very impressed with myself! I was only one day off in my estimations! I think the official due date is now October 28th! On Monday I had my first prenatal appointment and the baby was moving and squirming around like you wouldn't believe! It's little arm was going up and down and looked like it was waving at us :)}

{Here is an attempt at a belly photo of sorts. You can see it starting to pop out a little! Don't mind my cranky face in this picture...I was pretty tired and this was post nap time :) Starting this Saturday my Mom and I are going to take regular belly photos for me to post and keep track of the baby's growth. I will be 12 weeks on Friday, so our new tradition will be meeting for coffee in the morning and then finding a cool wall to take pictures in front of! So excited to start documenting! My mom (check out here blog) is a photographer too, which means I will actually have some quality pictures up now and then :)}

{Today has been such a great day! Hubs and I went to the hospital for the ultrasound, and it was his first time seeing the baby! So Fun! Then we had a quick coffee date at Peet's. Then I dropped him off at work and went to Imwalle Gardens for some groceries! I love this place! They grow a lot of their own produce and its super cheap! I bought eggs, milk, bread and a ton of produce for under $25! It is fun too because they have lots of plants! I was tempted to buy some today but am holding off til I have somewhere to plant. :) It is such a beautiful day and having to get up early for my appointment really kicked me into high gear! I have cleaned and organized all over the house and feel good about what has been done :) After I go nanny, we are going to see Arther for a friends birthday tonight. Should be fun :) What have you been doing on this fine day?}

{Some of you have probably heard of yesstyle.com. I have posted items from there a few times but more recently found their maternity line called Momnuri! It is sooo much fun! They don't have a ton to choose from, but the pieces they do have are adorable!}

{I am super smitten with this top! I love the stripes and the little girl! Just so fun to wear wit leggings and it looks way comfy!}

{I am actually considering this dress because I am in Savannah's wedding in August and need something cute to wear to bridal showers and such! The only thing is it cost $85 and I'm not sure Im willing to spend the bucks! But it is adorable none the less!}

{the perks of being a bed bug}

{While I was stuck in bed these last 2 weeks or so I got bit by the shopping bug and my laptop became my gateway to buying lots of new fun things! Thought I'd share a few! Cuz everybody likes to shop, right?}

{I made a big order yesterday from American Apparel, which is wayyyy over due! I have currently only one semi presentable hoodie, so I ordered 3 new ones. They sell a two pack for a pretty good deal so I got it in the colors...pewter and a sort of cranberry color. I also got a speckled dark grey colored hoodie too! So excited!}

{I also got a new pair of winter leggings in black, which I wear almost everyday! I love them! I have been redying them and sewing up holes but the ones I have now have seen better days so I decided it was time for a new pair. American Apparel can be sort of expensive but I felt like these were good purchases because this is almost a daily staple for my wardrobe and I had my last pair for a few years! I have had people ask me how I can wear leggings without feeling like by butt is hanging out and these are honestly the answer. The winter leggings almost feel like pants because they are way thicker than most leggings! Try them! You'll see what I mean!}

{Then I got super excited because I spent enough for free shipping and I could choose a free gift! So fun! I would never spend more just to get a free gift but I just happened to! i chose this $28 soft striped tee! Totally free! Awesome! I figured it is good maternity too since its pretty long!}

{I also picked up a 3 pack of the extra white strings for my hoodies because I always lose mine somehow! They were only $5 so I figured I would get them now since I'm already making a big order!}

{I also recently ordered a bunch of maternity clothes from Forever 21, which is awesome by the way! I know it's a little early to order maternity clothes but I noticed that on this certain day all online proceeds went to relief in Japan so I figured it was a good day to get them! I got maternity skinny jeans, a few different black tops and something they call the starter kit. It is amazing! For $15 you can get a tank top leggings and a belly band! I know right?!}

{ok this next one seems a little weird, I'll admit it! I have some diy fun-ness plnned for this crazy little cuck coo, so stay tuned for more on that :)}

{and last but most certainly not least...I ordered the Timi and Leslie Mirelle Diaper Bag! Now I may have ordered it by mistake off ebay while just looking around but I am so glad I did! I LOVE IT! It is so beautiful in person! Everywhere I looked I saw $160 price tags for this beauty but I score a brand new one with tags still on, on ebay for $50!! Boo-yah!}

{hi guys! i figured it was time a make an appearance again...crawl out of the sheets, peek out of my shell, so to speak. I have had the last 4 days off from the coffee shop which means I have been in bed til noon everyday, no joke! I feel like I can't possibly get enough sleep. Every time I pick up the lappie to blog, I just want to read everyone elses posts! Oh dear! Well whats a girl to do! I was going to write earlier in the week to ask for advice from you mamas who have come before. I have felt like I am in a first trimester slump. Some of this is for obvious reasons, being sick all the time, and tired. But i literally have to drag myself out of bed. I didn't do my hair for over a week, and if you know me personally you know what my crazy head of hair does when untamed! I feel unmotivated to do anything and don't really want to see anyone. I should have asked this sooner as I now feel like I am coming out of this a bit, but did any of you Moms experience this and how did you shake it off? I know that to an extent this is normal but I felt like such a bum. Now, just so no one gets worried..I am not depressed..it's nothing like that :)

In other news I'm still pretty sick, which although it is no fun, I am still very happy about. As far as I know I am about 9 weeks now. I have my first prenatal appointment in about 2 weeks so I'll know more then. My sweet friend Jess sent me two adorable little plushies from her etsy shop and I am in love! I will have to post pictures later. I hope you have all had a great weekend!}

Hi friends! Here is what I've been up to lately! Drinking lots of beautiful hot chocolate...

...made some soup, some banana bread, fixed my stove, and bought the bag I was loving...

...oh, and one other thing... :)

I hope this explains my short absence lately. I was hesitant to share the new so early, as I am only 8 weeks now, and many of you are aware of our last pregnancy and how that went. I shared some about that here. Nicolai and I are excited for this baby, but a little nervous. I decided to share because having the support of our friends and family through out our last pregnancy was price less and it just seems better to share rather than sit quietly, being afraid of what could happen. Instead I want to celebrate this baby, plus the only thing I've been wanting to write about is the baby and baby related things. :) So now that the cat..er..baby is out of the bag, so to speak, let the blogging commence! Another reason I have been so quiet is that I have been pretty sick and tired. All I want to do is sleep and eat...I'm like a baby! It may sound weird but I am excited that I am sick because last time I was pregnant I didn't have any of the normal symptoms. This time I pretty much have them all. I'm taking that as a sign that things are going well in there :)

{A Load of Crock: Chelsea of Seablanket}

Vegetarian Pineapple + Barbecue Tofu

Hi everyone! It’s Chelsea from Seablanket.com. I’m excited to be wrapping up Allison’s crock pot series, it’s been so fun! This is one of my favorite Crock Pot recipes and is perfect for lettuce wraps or poured over stir-fry veggies and rice with sesame seeds! Not only is it easy and take less than 10 minutes to prepare, but it’s also my favorite way to marinate my tofu.

Ingredients:
-2 containers of Firm Tofu, pressed
-1 1/2 cups Ketchup
-3 Tbsp brown sugar
-2 Tbsp soy sauce
-1 Tbsp Apple Cider vinegar
-1 Tbsp Red Pepper Flakes
-1/2 tsp Garlic Powder
-Salt and Pepper to Taste
-1 can Diced Pineapple, Drained

Cut up your tofu into 1” cubes. Combine tofu and all ingredients into your crock pot. Stir, cover and cook on low for 5-6 Hours. Stir and serve. Makes 8 Servings
